Nico lowered his snout, his body stiff with suppressed fury as he stalked toward that black shape.

Phil felt her heart lurch into her throat. She scanned the small clearing, looking for a weapon. She spied a stout stick small enough for her to wield but large enough to cause some damage, and lunged for it.

That black shape flew out of the bushes at the same time that Nico launched himself toward it. The two beasts met in the air. Nico looked like nothing more than a mass of snarling teeth and muscled fury. Phil resisted the urge to cover her ears; the sound of his wolf rage surely had to echo through the forest for miles. When they hit the ground Nico landed on top of the other beast. A black wolf, slightly smaller than the baronet himself.

Phil closed her sweaty hand over the stick.

Nico pinned the black wolf, his jaws going for its throat. Another growl erupted from the bushes, and Nico’s teeth snapped on empty air as he turned to face the new threat.

Phil stood, despite her wobbly legs, and brandished her weapon as another beast leapt at Nico. Dear heavens, not another were-wolf. This one looked as big as Nico, with similar brown and white streaked fur but with the blackest eyes Phil had ever seen. All of them had at least twice her body weight, even the smaller black one, and that weight looked to be nothing but pure muscle and fang.

The brown wolf halted before he reached Nico, lowered his head, and snarled. The baronet rumbled back at him, unmoving from his position atop the black wolf. Phil took two steps, swinging her stick behind her, ready to bash the brown wolf on his hindquarters.

And then the black wolf whined and bared its throat.

Nico shook his head as if to clear it, then met Phil’s eyes and barked at her. She froze. He turned his attention back to the brown wolf and growled low, this time not in anger, but in warning. The brown wolf yipped, lowering its ears and tucking in its tail.

Nico lowered his head and licked the black wolf’s face. And then the very air seemed to waver as all three shifted to human at once.

Phil stared at Nico, who now lay sprawled atop a young lady with hair as midnight black as her fur had been. Her brown eyes held a dark beauty, her face a feral quality that would fire any man’s lust. When she swept the hair from her face, her movements displayed the same carnal grace that Nico possessed.

A flush of jealousy rocked Philomena. The newcomer was young, lithe, a better match for Nico than Phil could ever hope to be.
